Traditional Greek recipes for Christmas

Wishing you a happy and safe holiday season, we get into the Christmas mood with a recipe for a traditional Greek sweet treat we all make at this time of the year: melomakarona, delicious honey-soaked Christmas cookies, sprinkled with crushed walnuts.

Ingredients 原料

For the dough 面团

1kg all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 tablespoons ground cinnamon and cloves

1 pinch of salt

2 tea cups ground walnuts

1 wineglass freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice

1 wineglass brandy

1 tea cup sugar

1 tea cup extra-virgin olive oil

Coarsely chopped walnuts mixed with ground cinnamon and cloves

For the syrup 糖浆

1 glass water

1杯水

1 glass honey

1杯蜂蜜

2 glasses sugar

2杯白糖

2-3 cinnamon sticks

2-3根肉桂棒

1 lemon zest

1片柠檬皮

1 orange zest

1片橙皮

Steps 做法

In a small pan, mix the water with sugar and honey, add the cinnamon sticks, the lemon and orange zest, and boil for 6-8 minutes. Let the syrup cool.

在一个小平底锅中,将水、白糖和蜂蜜混合,加入肉桂棒、柠檬皮和橙皮,煮沸6-8分钟。让糖浆冷却。

Preheat the oven at 160° C.

烤箱预热至160度。

Sift the flour with the baking soda and the baking powder.

Pour half of the flour in a large bowl and add the oil, the brandy, and the sugar. Knead well adding gradually the remaining flour, the ground cinnamon and cloves, a pinch of salt and the walnuts. When the dough is ready (quite soft but not watery), shape the cookies, usually into oval shapes.

将一半面粉倒入大碗中,加入油、白兰地和白糖。一边揉一边逐步加入剩余的面粉、肉桂粉和丁香、少许盐和核桃,揉匀。当面揉好后(面团要非常柔软,但水不能多),制作成小饼,一般是椭圆形。

Use one large non-stick baking tray to place the melomakarona and bake for about 30 minutes.

把melomakarona放入一个大的不粘烤盘并烘烤约30分钟。

Remove the baking tray from the oven. While the melomakarona are still hot, pour over each one 1 tablespoon of syrup and let them absorb it.

将烤盘取出时,趁热在melomakarona上浇上一汤匙糖浆,使糖浆渗入甜点。

When ready, place them on a platter and sprinkle them with the crushed walnut.

准备好后,将melomakarona放在盘子上,然后撒上碎核桃仁。
